Create Your Own Christmas Swag
Many years ago I realized that I could make my own Christmas wreaths and swags out of the pine boughs we cut off of the bottom of our Christmas tree! It is something I look forward to every year after our tree is in its stand. I plop down on the floor with garden shears in hand and use whatever leftover branches I have to create a masterpiece for our front door!
Gather the supplies
Pine Boughs
Ribbon
Garden Shears
Scissors
Floral Wire
Create the swag
Step 1 - Choose Your Base Piece
From your pine boughs, choose a sturdy piece that has a shape and width you’d like your swag to have. This will be the “backdrop” for your entire swag.
Step 2 - Fill It In
Choose a few more thinner pieces to lay over the base piece and fill in your swag. Add pieces until you have it as full as you want!
Step 3 - Wire It Up
Cut about 18” of floral wire and tightly wrap the top of the branches together. Leave about 4-6” of wire at the back of your swag.
Step 4 - Create A Loop For Hanging
Using the extra 4-6” of wire, create a small loop by twisting the wire. This is how you will hang your swag.
Step 5 - Add The Bow
Cut a long piece of your favorite Christmas ribbon (the thicker the better, and wired ribbon is great for holding its shape!) and tie a big bow at the top of your swag to hide the wire.
Other notes
This is a great project to do with the whole family! If you have enough pine boughs everyone can make their own. They also make great gifts!
If you don’t have your own pine boughs they can be purchased from most tree farms or even your local hardware store or grocery store.
